From the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s Gary Lux was Austria’s Mr. Eurovision: he appeared as a solo artist in the contests of 1985 and 1987, but had first represented his country in 1983 as a member of Westend (their bouncy but insubstantial entry Hurricane finished in the Top 10 that year). In addition he performed on the stage in 1984, 1993 and 1995 as a backing singer.
Everything about Nur Noch Gefühl (English translation: “Only Emotion”) screams 1980s – from Lux’s mullet haircut to the obligatory saxophone solo, but it’s a decent tune and deserved better than the 20th position it achieved on the night. Indeed in our ranking only seven songs from 1987 are placed higher.
We’ll be hearing more from Gary later.
